I Made This: Gyudon Bowl with No Mirin

Welcome back to my blog! This time, I’m gonna make a new section and it’s called I Made This – some pieces of me writing my cooking experiences. Honestly, I’m super nervous making this stuff because mostly I’m failing to make several cooks on my past๐Ÿ˜‚ but thank God I’m getting better on it woohoo!

First thing first, I’m so in love with Gyudon bowl – I like its saltiness, texture, and the slurping sensation for the meat itself (if you know what I mean). There is one restaurant which sells a really good Gyudon bowl and I always make an order for at least 1-2 times in a week; but because of this “mess”, that restaurant were temporarily closed for the past 4 months and I’m like “what in the world am I going to find this superb Gyudon bowl” ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Through this longing feels, I thought of making my version of Gyudon bowl that easy to make with simple ingredients – no mirin, no dashi. I just put a basic and must-have-ingredients-in-your-kitchen.

What you need (for 4 servings):
  • 500 grams of thinly sliced boneless short rib
  • 2 cloves of peeled garlic, roughly chopped
  • 2 cloves of onion, sliced
  • 5 grams of ginger (½ piece), chopped
  • 4 tablespoons of teriyaki sauce (I recommend Kikkoman Garlic Teriyaki Sauce, its completely good)
  • 1 tablespoon of soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of pepper
  • ½ piece of lemon, squeezed
  • 250 mL (2,5 cups) of water

Let’s get started!
  1. Marinate the meat with soy sauce and a teaspoon of pepper (it’s better for you to do this 30 minutes before you start to cook)
  2. Melt the butter, add the garlic and onion to the skillet. Cook them with medium heat until translucent, then add the ginger
  3. Stir in meat and cook it until browned
  4. Add the teriyaki sauce, a pinch of sugar, and soy sauce
  5. Stir-fry the meat, then add the water until its boiling
  6. When the water is reduces, season with salt and pepper. Add the lemon juice for the last touch
  7. Lower the heat, simmer for about 15 minutes

Mission accomplished! On my first attempt, I was starstruck with this bowl. It has a same taste with the original one and only took like probably 45 minutes more or less. The seasoning itself is according to your appetite, so I suggest you add them with the recipe first then add it gradually. I hope you can try this soon and hook yourself on cook! xx
